First, it means that you have humbled yourself before God, repented of your sins, and trusted Jesus Christ for complete forgiveness: based on what he has done for you through his life, death, and resurrection.  “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God…” 1 Peter 3:18

Second, it means that you love God, and are committed to following Him. You are open to Jesus Christ changing you in ways that you cannot change yourself, in order to become more like him in character, heart, and actions.  You are seeking to live your life in step with the Holy Spirit’s direction.  “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” Mark 12:30 ESV

Third, being a follower of Jesus Christ means participating in his mission, sharing the message of forgiveness with those who don’t yet know Christ, and loving others with the same kind of sacrificial love that you have received from God.  “And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.'” Matthew 4:19 ESV
